Smart Projectors Have Become A Part Of The Luxury Consumer Tech Market.

The Indian smart home technology market has grown significantly within the last 5 years. The covid 19 lockdowns have greatly aided in increasing the demand for smart projectors. These devices have become an intrinsic part of the consumer market. Smart projectors fall in the luxury consumer tech market, a category that exists between the high-end television market and the home theatrical experience.

“Consumers have always craved larger-than-life, immersive entertainment but it’s very difficult to get TV’s with screens of 85 to 100 inches. When they opted for conventional projectors to get the requisite screen size, they found it hard to switch it on or fix it easily,” said Mr. Sushil Motwani, Official Representative of XGIMI in India. Then emerged the smart projector category, which ticks all the boxes and is doing exceptionally well.”

 How did XGIMI capitalize on the interest of customers for smart projectors in India?

Our initial launch was at an exhibition organized by ‘What Hi-Fi’ in March 2020. It was among the best platforms, to introduce our product to like-minded people in the tech industry and to generate interest. 

Since then, the demand has been steadily increasing, and many XGIMI consumers, many of who previously had purchased MoGo and MogoPro, have also upgraded to Halo, Halo+, and the Horizon series. When XGIMI heralded the plug-and-play ease in India, which allowed users to use the projector exactly like a Smart TV, causing further interest in the market. This plug-and-play ease did not require any additional device like a Fire TV stick or a Bluetooth speaker, making it the first choice of smart consumers.

How successfully do you think XGIMI has been in changing the perception of projectors in India?

Before 2020, a lot of projectors meant for entertainment were being sold on e-commerce platforms like Amazon, and offline but detailed information about their features and specifications appeared scarce. 

When XGIMI arrived, it communicated its USP and the features that set it apart with clarity and precision. Slowly consumers began to explore the brand to know more about its specifications, visual quality, and built-in TV grade chip. Then the organic reviews came pouring in and we developed a close relationship with every single customer who bought our products. Apart from inculcating more interest in the projector segment, XGIMI has changed the perception that projectors are cumbersome to install and use. Its plug-and-play ease of use and compact portability has made people believe that it can definitely replace the television. You don’t require a carpenter, an electrician, or interior decorator, or an IT technician to put it up. It does not take up much space and all the user requires is a white wall to enjoy a movie or a game night like never before.

 What makes XGIMI Smart Projectors a new-gen must-have luxury product?

The most outstanding feature is the portability along with the ease of use, the plug and play convenience, and the luxury of having everything in one small box.

We presented the Halo in 2020 and in 2021, we launched the Halo+. Now post the MoGo series, a new series is in the works. In smart projectors, an in-built Android TV or Google TV is an advantage and more upgrades are coming every few years in terms of improved sound, design, projection, portability, battery life, etc. When we launched the portable series of XGIMI in India, we used the LED DLP technologies while many other brands were still in the old era of mercury bulbs and lamp-based projectors. And now the next generation of projectors is going to be based on laser technology. We are already working towards it. Laser and ultra-short-throw (UST) technologies will be arriving in India soon and we are very excited about them. The faster that a brand adapts to these new technologies, the better it is going to be for them and the consumers. 

 What are the benefits for a customer when they buy a luxury lifestyle projector from XGIMI?

The benefits would be the ease of use, plug-and-play convenience, world-class quality, state-of-the-art features, prompt and empathetic service, and extended warranty. The Fira Barcelona, Gran Vía ISE 2022 opens its door in full swing with over 50,000 attendees on the first day. Mike Blackman, Managing Director at Integrated Systems Events, revealed that there would be 844 companies exhibiting from 43 countries, in five halls occupying 48,000 square meters of exhibition space, during the four days of ISE 2022 (10-13 May). 

A whopping figure of 105 of these companies was from Spain. Also attracting attention on the eve of the exhibition was an I Rise projection mapping experience on a curved building in the Plaça d’Espanya by the Fira Montjuïc – sister venue to ISE’s new home, the Fira Gran Vía. The projection mapping was created and produced by Barcelona-based Flaix Studio.

In order to visit, each individual must have registered via the online registration portal on the ISE website and have downloaded the ISE App, the badge for the show will appear on the ISE app.

The Indian market for Smart Home solutions is still at an extremely nascent stage, but on the cusp of growing exponentially over the next 10 to 15 years. While there has always been aspiration amongst new home buyers for automated homes, these solutions were considered to be way too expensive. However, of late, smart home solutions have become more affordable, operating platforms have become more stable, and awareness has increased. As a result, demand has been on the upswing. Further, as the cost of construction rises, consumers find that the cost of automating a home is relatively cheaper on a per square foot basis as compared to earlier days. Other factors driving demand are the increasing need for security solutions, multi-room entertainment, and the fact that domestic staff are now harder to get. The pandemic has also fuelled the need for smarter and self-sufficient homes. 

Speaking on the dissimilarities between the Indian and global markets, Mr Manmohan Ganesh says, “The primary difference between global markets and India is that awareness of home automation is much higher abroad. Another big difference is the high cost of power abroad which necessitates some level of investment into smart solutions that reduce energy consumption. In India the cost of power is still affordable and therefore affluent homes don’t bother with energy-saving lighting or HVAC. Moreover, since most Indian homes invariably have domestic help, the need for automated lighting, security, sprinkler systems, etc does not arise. However things have already started to change, particularly post Covid, and Indian homes too have begun considering smart home technology

“Internationally there seems to be greater demand for retrofit solutions, whereas in India consumers prefer a custom fit home automation The reason being there is a greater amount of new home construction in the developing world as compared to mature markets. Another difference is that Indians prefer professionally installed systems whereas in the West many still prefer DIY solutions. We believe this trend will continue in the years to come”, he adds.

Would you like to run us through PRO FXs journey to date? What are the hurdles it overcame on its way? 

While PRO FX was established 22 years ago, our focus for the initial years was limited to AV only. Would you like to open up about the distribution path you take to reach the end consumers? Is there any particular business strategy or model, PRO FX always follows, to thrive in todays competitive industry?

PRO FX has a dual strategy to reach out to end customers. We have a pan-India network of over 400+ reseller partners and 10 company-owned stores in Metro cities. This enables us to reach customers in even the smallest towns. Our company-owned stores are designed to showcase the more premium range of products that dealers would typically find difficult to invest in. We also encourage dealers to bring their own customers to our stores when the need for a high-end experience arises. 

Which sector(residential, commercial or hospitality) is switching to automation or smart solutions the most? Why? 

While commercial requirements for automation are definitely growing, the larger spends on smart technology are among residential clients. Decisions on investments among commercial customers are often based only on costs. However, in the case of residential customers, system features, reliability, ease-of-use and brand influence their decision making.

According to you, which factors can hinder the growth of the smart AV industry? What steps need to be taken to initiate an unhindered expansion? 

High import duties, rising freight costs, high local levies (GST at 28% on display devices) and regulatory hurdles (WPC and BIS approval)make these solutions unaffordable for the common man. Some level of domestic manufacture and tax rationalization will help bring costs down and boost consumption.

The CDE6520 will allow students to offer their opinions and clear their doubts, whilst the TD2455 will assist teachers in controlling the view on the CDE6520 and conducting activities with students.

Educators will also make extensive use of ViewSonic’s proprietary and integrated software, myViewBoard. myViewBoard has been well received by users, reaching a milestone of over 3 million MVB subscribers. Today, a home cinema is not only considered expressive but also Avant grade, which offer an experience of luxury, says Arshad Lakdawala.

India is moving ahead to match the global standards in the audio-video segment. Today, home theatre systems are gaining rapid popularity as people can no longer gather in cinema halls due to restrictions imposed by the government to fight COVID-19. There was a time when home cinemas were restricted to only a niche audience, the uber-rich class. But, today, everyone wants their home to be equipped with a home cinema. “Pandemic was the major push factor for the growth of the high-end audio-video industry in India, where the customers are building an exclusive home theatre in their homes making it a necessary commodity in their lives and the ones that had, have upgraded it. The market will see an upward trend for the coming years”, says Arshad Lakdawala, VP, Sales & Marketing, MZ Audio Distribution, India.

How would you describe the current market for the high-end audio segment(Speakers and Subwoofers) in India? What are the companys latest launches or partnerships in this segment? 

The high-end audio segment (Speakers & Subwoofers) is witnessing enthusiastic sales this year. The reason is that customers, belonging to the upper class of the societies, are demanding premium products and services. With the growing number of millionaires in India, the high-end segment is expected to grow 17.5 USD Billion by 2025. 

We have recently tied up with Episode Speakers – a brand from SnapOne. “Episode” offers the best speakers in the industry. These are made with premium material for our custom integrators. Episode speakers look and sound like no other speakers available in the market.

Which cities or zones, in India, witness maximum sales and why? People of which segment are the primary buyers of high-end home audio-video solutions?

The large metros including Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata hold the top five spots in the rankings, in terms of highest sales of the high-end audio solutions. Tier 2 & Tier 3 are also witnessing growth opportunities. The main reason for the growth in Tier 1 cities is well established retail stores, presence of high-end brands. This evaluates the optimal level of penetration. The uber-rich class was once the main buyer of high-end audio-video solutions, but now it is gaining popularity among the mid-income group as well.

 Would you like to speak on the companys distribution channel? How does it benefit the associated brands?

Mz Audio does a market analysis and constantly searches for new opportunities to achieve peak sales performance. We try to build a strong relationship with our channel partners and take the responsibility of making sure that products are moving from our channel partners stores. 

Brands that are associated with us have always grown exponentially in the Indian market due to our strong market presence, which connects Indian resellers and integrators with the finest brands from all over the world.

Would you like to run us through the companys journey and experiences in the luxury audio-video industry till now? What are the challenges the company overcame on the way?

MZ Audio Distributions (India) was founded in 1997. It started as a distributor for luxury audio – video brands. Since then, it has been aiming to connect Indian resellers and integrators to the finest audio-video brands from all over the world. MZ Audio diversified its brand portfolio over 20+ years, emerging as one of the leading names in the industry. There are people in India who manufacture speakers or assemble them, which often gets confusing for the end-users. But, the clientele in India knows which quality of speakers to buy. 

One of the challenges that we have recently faced, was fulfilling the supply against the strong demand from the consumer. However, we are overcoming that. Also, the price that had recently gone up due to the high rise of freight on import, is getting a hike in product prices.

What are the latest innovations in the residential audio-video segment? How are they revolutionizing the lifestyles of the urban mass? 

The high-end audio-video industry is competitive where new technologies have entered the market to hold its position. Streaming technology has been quite revolutionizing. This made people switch to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth compatible devices and demand wireless networking systems (Custom Made Cinema) at homes.

 MZ audio distribution is known to have leading brands under its portfolio, how does MZ differentiate itself from its competitors?

Mz Audio Distributions (India) is honoured to distribute the finest brands in India and each of our brands have its unique audiences across India. We, at Mz Audio, work on different promotional activities for our products and organize big launch events for our upcoming products. I believe this makes us stand apart in the industry.

How would you define the growth graph of the industry 5 to 8 years down the line?

India is expected to capture a significant share of the high-end audio-video market due to increasing technological advancements, innovation and presence of the leading audio video brands in India compared to a few years back. It looks very promising and with this momentum, I anticipate the industry to reach 17.5 USD Billion by 2025.
